TOKYO, JAPAN – Sony Electronics announced a new firmware update for its Alpha 1 (A1) full-frame mirrorless camera. The update adds compatibility with CFexpress Type B memory cards. This enhancement aims to improve performance for photographers and videographers requiring high-speed data handling. The firmware is available now as a free download for existing A1 users.
The update allows the A1 to utilize CFexpress Type B cards alongside existing UHS-I and UHS-II SD card support. CFexpress Type B cards offer faster read and write speeds compared to traditional SD cards. This enables quicker transfer of large files, such as high-resolution photos or 8K video. Users shooting bursts or recording high-bitrate footage may see reduced buffer clearance times.
Sony’s A1 camera originally launched with dual card slots supporting UHS-II SD cards. The new firmware unlocks Slot 1 for CFexpress Type B media. Slot 2 remains compatible with UHS-I and UHS-II SD cards. This dual-slot flexibility lets professionals choose card types based on workflow needs.
The firmware also resolves minor operational issues reported by users. Stability improvements include fixes for rare freezing incidents during continuous shooting. Autofocus performance in low-light conditions has been optimized.
“This update reflects Sony’s commitment to evolving our products post-launch,” said a Sony spokesperson. “We listen to user feedback. Supporting CFexpress Type B meets demands for faster workflows in demanding environments.”
The firmware version 2.00 can be downloaded via Sony’s support website. Installation requires a computer and USB connection to the camera. Users should back up settings before updating.
Sony’s A1 remains a flagship model for hybrid stills and video capture. It features a 50.1-megapixel sensor, 8K 30p video, and 30fps continuous shooting. CFexpress Type B compatibility strengthens its position in professional markets.
The company encourages users to visit official support channels for update instructions. Further details on CFexpress Type B card performance with the A1 are available on Sony’s product page.
